Internet marketing is fast becoming a large part of many company’s marketing strategy due to the fact it is cost effective with a measurable return on investment and you can target customers through the vast reach of the Internet.
The reach of the Internet grows year after year and to show how many potential customers there could be online we’ve found some statistics to reveal just how many people in the UK have access to the Internet.
In the 2010 Internet Access survey of households and individuals from the Office for National Statistics, which was released at the end of August 2010, it was reported that 19.2 million UK households had Internet access, which was 73% of all households, and that there were 38.3 million individual Internet users (in this survey: adults aged 16 or over who had used the Internet in the 3 months prior to the survey) in the UK, which represented 77% of the UK adult population1. Of these, 30.1 million used the Internet everyday, the equivalent to 60% of the adult population1.
The survey also found that, in the last 12 months, 31 million people (or 62% of all adults) had bought or ordered goods or services online and 75% of all adults had used the Internet in the previous 3 months to find out information about goods and services1.
An eMarketer report in 2009 predicted Internet users (in this survey: a person of any age who uses the Internet from any location at least once a month) in the UK to rise to 41.7 million, which would be 67.8% of the total population. By 2013, it expects 43.7 million people will be online in the UK (70.7% of the overall population)2. The following chart shows the eMarketer figures of Internet users for 2008-2013.
